We killed our victim because he struggled with us — Arrested kidnappers

This was part of the confessional statement of  Emenike  Kelvin, a member of the seven-man  kidnap and armed robbery  gang who kidnapped and killed a United States of America-based businessman, Odidi  Nwaeze, at Satellite  Town area of Lagos State two weeks ago.

The police also recovered an AK47 rifle, the operational  motorcycles of the gang, two GSM phones and five magazines loaded with ammunition  from the criminals’ hideout around Okota area of Isolo, during a raid on the place.
The six suspects - Chibuzor Ozuagwu, Oliver Nwabueze, Emenike Kelvin, Uche Igbans, Emeka Obasi  and  Ngozi Onuowu were arrested by detectives attached to Area “E” Command, Festac town, Lagos last week , after the Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Abubakar, directed the Area Commander in charge of Area E, Mr Dan Okoro, to unmask the killers.  
The United States-based businessman, who was a clearing agent,  was two weeks ago kidnapped alongside a lady suspected to be his girlfriend by a gang of six gunmen. The  deceased businessman was forcefully being taken  away when the gunmen shot him inside his Sports Utility Vehicle, which they drove away after dropping his lifeless body.
The image maker in the state police command, Ngozi Braide, while speaking on the arrest of the suspects, said that they  belonged to a notorious  kidnap  syndicate that had in the last few years been terrorising residents of Festac Town and Satellite Town.
She  added that the police were on the trail of the runaway leader of the gang, who was accused of pulling the trigger. Braide stated that the police in the state were making efforts to contact Interpol to ensure that the suspect was arrested wherever he is hiding.
The deputy of the runaway ring leader, Emenike Kelvin, while speaking with the Crime Features, confessed that the gang actually killed the businessman but denied that the killing was part of their plan. He insisted that the gang had wanted to arrest the late Nwaeze and collect ransom from his family.
The 30-year-old Umuahia, Abia State-born suspect, while speaking on the incident, said that the gang had successfully abducted the late businessman and his girlfriend and was  about to drive away from the scene at Satellite Town, when the late Nwaeze began to struggle with them.
“Five of us went for the operation. We had overpowered the man and the lady in the vehicle and we were about going when he began to struggle with us. Some of us tried to  overpower him but he kept struggling,” Kelvin narrated.
He also confessed to have taken parts in some kidnapping operations by the gang and that  their victims were usually taken to  Onyebuchi Avenue in Ago Okota area of Isolo, where ransom negotiation was usually done with members of the victims’ families.
