The passengers of the ill-fated Lagos-bound bus were said to be members of the African Church Solution camp, along Ewang Estate in Abeokuta, who were said to be travelling for a wedding ceremony of another member of the church.
The accident occurred at about 7.30 a.m., when the truck coming from an opposite direction lost control and rammed into the bus.
Eight of the passengers, including three males and five females, who were members of the same church, died on the spot as well as the driver of the ill-fated bus.
Other occupants of the bus fell unconscious and were later revived at the state hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta.
Four out of the little children, who were also on board, escaped unhurt while a 2-year-old girl sustained a head injury.
When Sunday Tribune got to the scene, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Fire Service, Ogun State Ambulance Services, the Police, as well as the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) were seen evacuating the victims.
The TRACE coordinator, Mr. Sola Bamidele, who was at the scene, blamed the accident on the truck driver for driving recklessly.
He pointed out that the bus took off from Abeokuta in less than 30 minutes before the accident occurred, adding that the authority was still trying to get in touch with the transport company to get the manifest of the passengers.
The coordinating officer of Ogun State Ambulance Services, Dr. Hassan Adelakun, also confirmed the death of some of the passengers.
He said that the remains of the victims had been deposited at the morgues of the state hospital, Ijaiye, and Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi-Aba, Abeokuta. Speaking with Sunday Tribune, the Public Relations Officer of the church, Mr. Adeyinka Adegbite, described the incident as unfortunate. He confirmed that a newly ordained priest of the church, Reverend Josahia Adebowale, was one of the victims of the unfortunate accident.
Adegbite said the deceased was ordained as a priest in the church three weeks ago.
The atmosphere at the church premises was tense as symphatisers, including the Primate of the church, Rt. Reverend Emmanuel Udofia, all wore mournful looks. source:Tribune
