So, to help work this out in double quick time, here are some questions to help suss out your date in seconds.

Who do you live with?
Probably one of the first questions to ask, this one will reveal instantly what stage of life your date is in: whether he or she is still living with parents, in a flat-share or in their own property. You don’t need to be in the same situation, but if it matters to you or to your date, it helps to know these things now.

How close are you to your family?
If there’s a family feud or over-bearing parents you might need to contend with, it’s better to find this out sooner rather than later. A nice open question like this will give your date plenty of scope to give insights into his or her family life, and how they react to it, as well as to their family values in general.

How long do you think you’ll stay in your current job?
The answer to this will reveal how happy your date is with the current status quo. He or she might hint at big ambitions, a generally sunny outlook or an overpowering discontent with life, all of which might help you make up your mind about whether this is the person for you.
What are your plans for the weekend?
For busy people, weekends are very precious indeed. So finding out how your date likes to spend them is key to working out whether you two are compatible. If the answer sounds like a weekend you would like to share then you could be on to a winner. The question has the added bonus of paving the way for your date to suggest a second meeting.

If you could live anywhere, where would you choose?
This is a quick way of finding out how well travelled and worldly your date is, and also gives you lots of information about what he or she wants out of life. It’s a good sign if you agree on either loving where you are at the moment, if you both have plans to travel, or to move to the countryside when you start a family.

Are you a cat or a dog person?
Everyone has an opinion on this so it’s bound to get even the most tongue-tied date chatting. And either you agree, in which case you might get on famously, or you disagree, and you can work out how well you click by how good-natured the argument is.

If you could be any animal, what would it be?
This is one of those silly, metaphorical questions which can let you both be a bit bonkers and imaginative. Your date’s answers will reveal if they have a good sense of humour and also what they want out of life. Maybe they like being pampered and cuddled like a cat, or are they playful and energetic like a dog?

Have you eaten around here before?
You may be meeting just for drinks, but there’s nothing wrong with picking your date’s brains about the local area. His or her inside knowledge will help you suss out a bit more about whether your lifestyles are compatible. Are you both into the finer things in life or are you both party animals? Or maybe you’re both counting down the nights out until you’ve found the one you can stay in with?

Did you read the news about…?
Chatting about a news event will provide you with a wealth of information about your potential partner. Are they well-informed or living in a bubble, for example? Moreover, talking about current affairs will give you a clue to their political, moral and religious persuasions, all of which are key to how compatible you two will be.

How bored are you with the dating process?

A tough question to ask but one which will reap you rewards. If you can both make light of your situation you’ll instantly feel more comfortable with one another. Your date’s attitude to dating will also be telling. Is he or she disillusioned with the process, or new and excited by it all? There might also be hints there to past relationships, which might affect things in the present and the future.
